The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

My name is Bat, although when I play online games I tend to go by Gone. She/Her. Bi with heavy lesbian leanings. Mass multishipper in multiple fandoms because I have no chill. I'm 39, have a son who's my nephew that I've raised since he was 3 weeks old (he's now 14yo!) and help co-parent another nephew (he's 12yo). I also have a cat who is happiest being my shoulder baby, hates pets but tolerates kisses, and is named after my mom at her insistence (despite me being the one who bought him - she also seems to be jealous of him on some level so now she doesn't like him, lol). I work as a Caretaker for my mom who's been reluctantly bedbound for a few years now (we're hoping PT will help her at the very least get up long enough to sit in a wheelchair). I've been in fandom since I was 15 and have no plans to go anywhere. =)

I'm doing this challenge because I had a few rough years recently where I struggled to make content and was in a bit of a depression state so I stayed away from DW for a while. Hated it and want to be active in both again, so I'm hoping this challenge and others help me get back to it on a more regular basis. 8^)

Still trying to get back into writing so I pulled the trigger and finished the half-completed fifth chapter to my Pokemon/Hunger Games/Cabin in the Woods fic. It read short and quick to me (and a bit incomplete), but it's somehow over a thousand words, idk how but I won't complain. It got a few hits but no new likes, which is fine. It's my pet passion project because sometimes you just have to scratch those odd ideas in your head.

With two other fics newly begun (one Pokemon - Gold/Silver fic and one Delicious in Dungeon - Marcille/Falin), I felt a bit embolden and just now decided to apply to scoop up a pinch hit for an exchange. I also decided not to stress myself too much with my ladiesbingo card and plan to aim for just 500-word stories to keep it low pressure. If I write more, cool. If not, also cool. I gradually hope to rebuild my writing ability because dammit if I don't miss it.

Speaking on fandomy things - I started watching anime more regularly. I've been slacking pretty hard on them for years for literally no reason. But I've been paying for Crunchyroll the past couple of months because my son needed to see the rest of One Piece and Netflix shit the bed with the episodes they have (he recently passed the 1000 episode mark, and holy shit, I'm proud of him - dunno if I'll jump into the series with similar gusto any time soon). I finally realized, after several months, that I'm an idiot and should be using it too since I'm paying for it, lol.

- My Hero Academia (season 6)
- Spy X Family (season 1)
- Am I Actually the Strongest? (episode 3)
- Delicious in Dungeon (episode 20)

It's tempting to jump into more series but I'm trying to restrain myself so I actually finish a show! Like, Chainsaw Man is currently on-hold while I finish at least one of the others on the list. My Hero Academia is also a bit on hold cuz I was watching it with my son but he's extremely focused on finishing One Piece and he can only watch one anime at a time (boo). He's been working on it for almost a year, to put our hiatus in perspective.

I'm also trying to get back into mangas. I've realized nothing beats holding a manga in hand so I'm alowly building a small "newer" collection (I have some books from back in my teen years, so they're "old" now). My Hero Vigilantes is the forefront of my collection so far. I haven't read it yet - gonna wait until I get caught up with anime again. Yes, I know I don't have to, but I want some content in the same universe to consume once I get caught up to the main series.

Also, the pilot for Homestuck the Animation dropped recently and I'm pretty hyped. Some ppl were complaining it was too short and missed a lot of content but it was just a pilot, not the complete series, or even a snapshot of a season. Episodes could be longer which would help. There's also ppl complaining about the voices, but clearly they have no idea who voices the characters so their opinions can eat ass. I just hope the fandom doesn't get toxic again and fuck it up for the rest of us fans who are generally excited.

I hadn't considered it before, but I might end up writing HS fanfic again. I don't know if that's a good thing or not. O_O Probably not. But I mean... I did write a lot of it. ^-^;;

Welp, that's some shite. Playstation has dumped Genshin Impact from the PS4. My console of preference. Sigh.

Not completely bad. I still have a shit ton of the game to play. I've barely worked on the Inuzuma main questline, for frame of reference. And despite being able to jump into a lot of main quest storylines for Natlan, I'm choosing to do them when I "unlock" them chronologically. So yeah, tbat's a lot of game still. This is what happens when you get carried away with side-quests.

I'm gonna miss the random requests for people to join my world. I always denied them, but I'm gonna miss them, lol.

At least until I start playing Genshin on my xbox one. Gotta do some rearranging before then and since that involves new furniture, that might take a bit.

In non-Genshin talk, I need to get back to writing. It's been a long while and having a laptop again has inspired me again. I've been toying on a book idea, believe it or not. Actually, I've had several book ideas that I've been poking at over the past few years. Three of them serious - an urban fantasy YA story, a fantasy YA, and an urban fantasy crime series based on fairy tale characters (the first story has to do with Peter Pan). I'm especially enthusiastic about the last one, but I've actually put a bit of work into the other two.

As for fanfic, well, I'm finally consuming fanfic worthy media, lol. (Well, not "finally", just more of it.) Been playing Pokemon Sword and just got Sun. Made me miss my interests in writing/reading Pokemon crossover fics with Silent Hill or some kind of post-apocalyptic series. I'm glad as well to have new characters for my ongoing Pokemon/Hunger Games crossover fic (rather unfortunate for them, actually).

I'm looking forward to the new Harry Potter series, which is a fandom oldie fave. I will NOT be watching it on HBO when it comes out. I'm going to sail the seven seas for it and I recommend you all do the same.

Also, been watching a lot of horror movies this year and I gotta say, it's been a hell of a good year for them. I can't say I have definitive horror movie fave of the year but the recent Weapons and Together had some great horror scenes in recent movies, imo. Ok, and I loved every moment of 28 Years Later, but that's completely biased as I'm a huge 28 Days/Weeks Later fan (and a huge fan of Alex Garland overall, tbh).

I'm rambling now. Feels good. =)

I'm about 50% less angsty and in my feels now! Got a new laptop (that I bought myself - used but a beauty nonetheless). I have a job... as my mom's caretaker, but I get paid for it, so win!

It's crazy that I haven't posted in such a long time but I was in a shit headspace for a while there. Depression is a bitch, ya know? I'm no better by any means, just kind of learned to let go of what I can't win. Playing video games helps, too. A Lot.

I don't fangirl as much as I used to, but I miss it. I have much fangirling to do about Genshin Impact and My Hero Academia. I'm not sorry about it, lol.

Oh! I've been reading a lot lately. I discovered the ability to walk down the street and read a book on my phone. Sounds impossible but it's the best time for me to get my reading done.

There's other things to say, but mostly I wanted to say hi!

I never really intended to play Fortnite.

And then Mase convinced me to download it on my PS4 for him to play. Except he barely plays video games.

........ I just hit level 60 last night.

I just came across this post about why Bolin can lavabend but not metalbend. I think it goes way off track and misses a very simple reason for it. His dad was from the Earth Kingdom but his mom was from the Fire Nation. He got earthbending from his dad’s side but I believe because his mom is from a nation of firebenders, it’s likely she passed on a small bit of that ability (regardless of whether or not she was a bender herself because obviously benders can parent non-benders) to him. Because of this, he’s able to lavabend instead of metalbend. The article points at it being because he was raised by a firebender (Mako) but that reason makes little sense because it’s clear you have to have inherited the ability which is why it makes more sense that Bolin inherited it from his mom.

Now the next question would be: Okay, that seems reasonable but why can’t Mako lavabend too when they share the same parents? And the answer to that is simple too: Mako strictly inherited firebending from his mom’s side (again, regardless of whether or not she was a bender which further backs up my first claim about Bolin). And even simpler than that, lavabending has to do with earth not just fire so you would have to be an earthbender to be able to lavabend as well.

But why could Ghazen do it, you ask? In real life, people use skin color to take a guess at what nationality a person is (as silly as that is in many cases) but in the ATLA/LoK universe, it’s eye color. Ghazen’s eyes are brown, despite being an earthbender. So it’s likely he has Fire Nation ancestry, so thus, lavabender! And yeah, it’s a rare ability but only because mixed nationalities is still a new thing at the point of LoK. In the future, I think eye color is will do little but give a vague clue of ancestry.

I think there’s other examples of mixed nationalities in their universe, such as sandbenders. Super weird ability, right? Not if you consider that they could be descents of mixed airbenders and earthbenders. It never made sense to me that the Fire Nation murdered ALL of the Air Nomads. I always figured some of them escaped and hid their abilities. Hiding in remote places of the Earth Kingdom would have been IDEAL to hide your airbending abilities and mix in parenting kids with earthbenders and boom, sandbenders!

... No, I haven’t given this a lot of thought long before I saw this article today. What would give you that idea?

On a completely different note, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power have been helping me fight my depression and inspired me to start writing again. I plan to start posting again more regularly because I finally have the drive to do so. I know I’ve said this in the past but it’s been a really hard for me these past few years (personally, not outside world related). But I feel good finally about wanting to legitimately start writing again.

I barely wrote this year but I managed to scrape together 2,255 words somehow. 600 words was my little sister’s college essay.

Every time I try to make a post I get distracted from it. Let’s see how this goes...

1. I was promptly interrupted from writing this entry literally three minutes after starting and got sidetracked from completing it for about a week. (And I was interrupted for several days yet again until today!)

2. Mase and Ace are doing remote learning, which means I have to sit in two classes at once! Both have issues focusing so this is super fun! (I’m lying. I’m dying. Please help. I don’t want to do the second and fourth grades again.)

On the bright side, I have something to do during day. My anxiety is suffering though. Sigh.

3. I watched Avatar the Last Airbender with the boys and I for the first time finished it! Now I’m rewatching Legend of Korra with the intent of finishing it (I only watched through to first few episodes of season 2, originally).

Mase asked if Katara and Zuko would get together when they got trapped in the crystal cavern (in ATLA) and I told him no. But it did give me insight into where Katara/Zuko fans might start getting the vibe for them. I don’t care for the ship but to each his own. I’m fairly happy with Kataang and aside from Mai/Ty Lee, so far I don’t really have any other ship interests for ATLA, which feels odd. (Azula hateship with Zuko or Katara, though, does pique my interest a bit.)

And until I finish Korra, I won’t talk about shipping, but I still love Korra/Lin (Korra/Asami too!).

4. I’ve been trying to draw more but I misplaced my black paper and it’s driving me crazy. I keep trying to sketch stuff but I keep envisioning it on the black paper so I’m really annoyed with my sketches, if that makes sense? I have a cool idea for a pic for the upcoming Friday the 13th next month. I have to find that paper!
